When it comes to food, we know how important it is to keep you fuelled, focused and full of energy throughout your time with us. Each day, you’ll have unlimited access to coffee, tea and biscuits, so there’s always something on hand to keep you going.
At lunchtime, you’ll be treated to a hearty two-course meal — homemade, hot comfort food designed to refuel and recharge you for the afternoon ahead. And to finish the course in true style, we uphold a much-loved tradition: on the final day, we gather for our famous fire-cooked BBQ, served just before the erection of the timber frame — the perfect way to bring everyone together, build excitement and set the tone for the finale.

Course Details
Over five hands-on days, you’ll work alongside our experienced tutors to build a real timber frame from start to finish, using larch grown, felled and milled right here in our North Wales woodland.
You’ll learn practical traditional timber framing skills including:
- Setting out and laying up a timber frame accurately
- Marking out traditional joints ready for cutting
- Cutting mortice and tenon joints using traditional hand tools
- Using timber framing chisels safely and accurately
- Understanding braces, pegs and frame connections
- Cutting, fitting and adjusting joints for a precise fit
- Dry fitting and assembling the different sections of the frame
- Working with locally grown timber and understanding its characteristics
- Reading the frame as a complete structure, rather than simply making individual joints
- Raising the finished timber frame together at the end of the course
The cost is £550 per person for the week with our two course lunch included each day and a free personalised Robert Sorby chisel to start your own dream builds back home.
We provide accommodation if you need it, camping and tree tents are 50% off. The cabin will be at full price, which you can book over the phone.

Yes. If you'd like to stay with us for the week, course participants receive 50% off our camping pitches and Tree Tents. You can also choose to stay in our woodland cabin, The Toad Hideout, which can be booked at the normal rate. Please contact us if you'd like to arrange accommodation alongside your course.
The course takes place here at Tree Tops and Train Tracks in Nannerch, North Wales, surrounded by our 18-acre woodland. It's a little different from learning in a conventional workshop — much of the timber we use is grown, felled and milled right here on site.
You'll work together as a group to create a real, full-size timber frame. Over the five days, you'll take the timbers through setting out, marking, cutting and fitting traditional joints before assembling and raising the finished frame. It's not simply a case of practising individual joints on scraps of timber — you'll get to see how all the different elements come together as one complete structure.
No. You don't need previous timber framing experience to attend the course. Our tutors will guide you through the process as you work on the frame, from setting out and marking the timbers through to cutting and fitting the joints. Whether you're new to timber framing or already have some practical woodworking experience, there's plenty to learn throughout the five days.
The £550 price covers the full five-day timber framing course, tuition from our two experienced tutors and a two-course lunch each day, along with tea, coffee and biscuits. You'll also receive your own personalised Robert Sorby chisel to use during the course and take home with you afterwards.
No, you don't need to arrive with a full set of timber framing tools. The tools and equipment needed for the course will be available for you to use, and you'll also receive your own personalised Robert Sorby chisel. If there is anything specific we'd like you to bring, we'll let you know before the course.
